SEJ UMPIRING GROWING IN LEAPS AND BOUNDS

14.07.2016

Significant work has been put into developing the umpires in the South East Juniors.  This work has paid off with the numbers in the South East Juniors Umpiring list growing from 186 to 305 since 2013.

The South East Juniors Umpiring Team is led by Rod Hamilton, SEJ Umpiring Manager.  He, together with his dedicated team, meets weekly to develop the umpires to ensure they have the skills and knowledge on how to umpire the games in the South East Juniors competition.

This year, the South East Juniors Umpiring Team was fortunate to secure two new training venues which allows for more flexibility in the delivery of the training across more of the region.  On Wednesday nights, training is done at Heatherbrae Reserve, Officer and on Thursday nights at Carlisle Park, Cranbourne which is a purpose built synthetic sports field. Carlisle Park’s surface guarantees that training can be held without worrying about the condition of the ground degrading.

SEJ Umpiring also provides umpires to schools for their football clinics and sports days, SSV Premier football for the  Hallam Academy and SSV for Year 7 to Year 12 for schools throughout the south eastern suburbs. Umpires are also supplied for SSV Primary school championships.  SEJ Umpires also officiated in the Metro and Subway Championships.

Rod’s team consists of:

-          Nick MacDonald – Head Coach

-          Laurie Girardo – Development Coach for new umpires

-          Craig Hookey – Development Coach for Boundary Umpires

-          Steve Richards – Development Coach for Goal Umpires

-          James Lesch – Umpire Appointments

-          Russell Collard – Warm Up Coach

We also have 600, 1100 and 1200 game umpires who are dedicated to the development of our future umpires.

The SEJ Umpiring Team is also community minded. In 2015 they raised $5,000 for Ronald McDonald House and sponsored a room at the House for the residents to stay.  20 SEJ umpires also went in and cooked for the residents for the evening; which was a great way to instil community values into the 17 teenage umpires in attendance.  The team also went down to the Christmas Party and ran activities for the kids at the hospital.

Rod says; “The success of our growth is through word of mouth.  We have a good team environment.  We try to get to know the parents and explain to them how their children are doing in their development.  We try to be flexible and schedule umpires in ways that supports their needs.  80% of our umpires are under 25 years of age.”

SEJ Umpiring has opened up umpiring pathway opportunities. Six out of the 25 girls in the Victorian Women’s Umpiring Academy come from the SEJ Umpiring Team.  The girls train at IKON Park fortnightly.  Three SEJ umpires officiate in the half time Auskick games at Etihad Stadium and MCG throughout the year.  Also, SEJ Umpires are transitioning into the senior umpire environment, with 18 umpires now doing games in the SEFNL and EFL senior competitions.

We also do combined training sessions with other umpiring groups and had five AFL field and boundary umpires come out to share their knowledge with the umpires in May 2016.
