The Under 13s struck first for SEJ at this year's Junior Championships.

AFLSE Junior Championships are up and running

A huge crowd flocked to Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Reserve on Wednesday night to watch some fine young talent strut its stuff on night one of the SEDA 2018 AFL South East Regional Junior Championships.

The most promising young talent from the Frankston Districts, Mornington Peninsula, South East and Yarra Ranges Junior Football Leagues took part in games in under 13 to 17s for boys and under 15 and 18s for girls.

A total of 22 teams will play 24 matches over three days, with Frankston Park and Shepley Oval in Dandenong to take over the reins from Beaconsfield for the last two days of competition on Saturday 9 and Monday 11 June.

The Queen’s Birthday carnival, an important stepping stone in the Dandenong Stingrays Pathway, has grown in significance over the years and is now aligned with both the Melbourne and St Kilda Football Club’s Next Generation Academies (NGA).

The SEJ were well represented on the evening, with the first taste of success coming in a keenly contested Under-13s contest against the FDJFL.

Coached by Seb Gargana, the SEJ fought off a late challenge from the FDJFL to take a perfect record into its next clash against AFL Yarra Ranges at Frankston Park at 10am on Monday.

Gargana was thrilled with his team’s performance after the match.

“Well played boys, I hope you can see now what we’re trying to achieve and how that style of play can work in a game of football,” Gargana told his players in the changerooms.

“It’s now very important that we prepare well for our next challenge. Get plenty of sleep boys, eat well, and we’ll see you bright and early on Monday. Your parents and everyone else in the room should be very proud of the way you played the game tonight.”
